About this experience
Approaching Mount Kilimanjaro from the remote northern side near the Kenyan border, the 6-Day Rongai Route is the only trail that ascends the mountain from the north. Known for its quiet, uncrowded trails, gentle incline, and drier microclimate (making it an ideal choice during shoulder rainy seasons), Rongai offers a true wilderness experience. The route climbs through pine and montane forests, across vast heather moorlands, and beneath the dramatic, jagged spires of Mawenzi Peak before crossing the high-altitude alpine Saddle to Kibo. Trekkers descend via the southeastern Marangu Route, offering a complete cross-mountain traverse. Day-by-Day Itinerary: Day 1: Nalemuru Gate to Simba Camp Metrics: Distance: ~8 km | Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Elevation: 1,950 m to 2,625 m | Habitat: Montane Forest & Plantation Activities: Morning drive from Moshi or Arusha around the eastern slopes to Nalemuru Gate near the Kenyan border for park registration. Begin trekking along a gradual winding path through pine plantations and cypress forest, transitioning into indigenous montane woodland. Look out for black-and-white colobus monkeys along the trail. Arrive at Simba Camp at the edge of the moorland zone for dinner and overnight. Overnight Stay: Simba Camp (Mountain Tents) Meals Included: Packed Lunch & Hot Dinner Day 2: Simba Camp to Second Cave to Kikelelwa Camp Metrics: Distance: ~9 km | Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Elevation: 2,625 m to 3,600 m | Habitat: Moorland Activities: Ascend steadily through open heath and heather moorlands with expansive views of the Kenyan plains to the north. Stop for a hot lunch at Second Cave (3,450 m). Continue trekking off the main trail across rolling terrain toward the jagged peaks of Mawenzi, reaching Kikelelwa Camp situated in a sheltered valley. Overnight Stay: Kikelelwa Camp (Mountain Tents) Meals Included: Breakfast, Hot Lunch, & Hot Dinner Day 3: Kikelelwa Camp to Mawenzi Tarn Camp Metrics: Distance: ~6 km | Hiking time: 3–4 hours | Elevation: 3,600 m to 4,330 m | Habitat: Alpine Desert Activities: A short but steep morning climb up grassy slopes into the stark alpine desert zone. Arrive early at Mawenzi Tarn Camp, spectacularly situated in a cirque directly beneath the towering rock spires of Mawenzi Peak. The afternoon is dedicated to rest and a short acclimatization walk around the tarn. Overnight Stay: Mawenzi Tarn Camp (Mountain Tents) Meals Included: Breakfast, Hot Lunch, & Hot Dinner Day 4: Mawenzi Tarn Camp to Kibo Hut Metrics: Distance: ~9 km | Hiking time: 5–6 hours | Elevation: 4,330 m to 4,700 m | Habitat: Alpine Desert / Lunar Landscape Activities: Trek westward across the wide, barren desert expanse known as "The Saddle," which connects the volcanic cones of Mawenzi and Kibo. Arrive at Kibo Hut on Kibo's eastern flank by early afternoon. Eat an early dinner and rest to prepare for the midnight summit attempt. Overnight Stay: Kibo Hut (Mountain Tents) Meals Included: Breakfast, Hot Lunch, & Hot Dinner Day 5: Kibo Hut to Gilman's Point / Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut Metrics: Distance: ~6 km ascent / 16 km descent | Hiking time: 6–8 hours ascent / 4–6 hours descent | Elevation: 4,700 m to 5,895 m (Uhuru Peak) down to 3,720 m | Habitat: Arctic Scree & Ice / Moorland Activities: Midnight wake-up call with light refreshments before starting the steep, zigzagging scree climb up Kibo's eastern flank. Reach Gilman's Point (5,685 m) on the crater rim at sunrise. Continue along the snow-draped crater rim past Stella Point to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the roof of Africa. Descend back to Kibo Hut for a short rest and warm lunch, then continue down across the Saddle to Horombo Hut. Overnight Stay: Horombo Hut (Mountain Tents) Meals Included: Breakfast, Hot Lunch, & Hot Dinner Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate & Return Metrics: Distance: ~20 km | Hiking time: 5–7 hours | Elevation: 3,720 m to 1,870 m | Habitat: Moorland & Rainforest Activities: Descend through the moorland zone past Mandara Hut, entering the lush, tropical rainforest of Kilimanjaro’s southeastern slopes.
