Safety Notes, Physical Requirements & Cultural Rules 1. Physical & Fitness Requirements: • Walking & Steps: Expect 2 to 3 miles (3–5 km) of total walking over uneven stone, brick courtyards, and cobblestone paths. Swayambhunath requires climbing approximately 365 stone stairs to reach the top. • Accessibility: Due to historic paving, ancient stairs, and narrow alleyways, this tour is not fully wheelchair accessible. 2. Health & Weather Preparation: • Hydration & Sun Protection: Bring a refillable water bottle, hat, and sunscreen, especially during sunny daytime tours. • Footwear: Wear comfortable, broken-in walking shoes or sandals that are easy to remove, as shoes must be removed before entering active temple sanctums and monastery prayer halls. 3. Religious Etiquette & Dress Code: • Modest Attire: Shoulders and knees must remain covered at all sacred sites (trousers, long skirts, or shirts with sleeves are recommended). • Circumambulation: Always walk clockwise around Buddhist stupas (Swayambhunath and Boudhanath), keeping the monument on your right-hand side. • Temple Restrictions: The inner sanctum of Pashupatinath Temple is restricted to Hindu devotees only. Non-Hindu visitors can view the main temple, courtyards, and sacred rites from the designated complex paths and riverbank. • Leather Restrictions: Leather items (belts, jackets, bags) are prohibited inside certain Hindu temple sanctums at Pashupatinath. 4. Wildlife & Local Awareness: • Monkey Safety: Swayambhunath is home to sacred wild monkeys. Keep food and plastic bags hidden, hold small belongings securely, and avoid close contact or feeding them. • Cremation Rites: At Pashupatinath, observe cremation ceremonies respectfully from across the Bagmati River. Photography must be conducted discreetly from designated viewing distances.
