About this experience

Overview Conquering Mount Kilimanjaro via the 8-day Lemosho Route is widely regarded as the ultimate high-altitude trekking experience on Africa’s highest peak. Approaching from the pristine, western wilderness of Londorossi Gate, this route delivers unmatched scenic beauty as it traverses five distinct ecological zones—from lush montane rainforest and heather moorlands to alpine desert and Arctic icefields. By spreading the trek across 8 days, this itinerary optimizes the critical "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization profile via Lava Tower and the Barranco Wall, yielding summit success rates exceeding 90%. Day-by-Day Itinerary: Day 1: Moshi to Londorossi Gate & Trek to Mti Mkubwa Camp Metrics: 3–4 hours hiking | 6 km | Elevation: 2,100 m to 2,820 m Activities: Morning pickup in Moshi and drive to Londorossi Gate for park registration. Transfer to the Lemosho trailhead to begin a gentle trek through dense, pristine rainforest. Spot Black and White Colobus monkeys and exotic forest birds en route. Overnight Stay: Mti Mkubwa Camp (Big Tree Camp) Meals Included: Packed Lunch & Hot Mountain Dinner Day 2: Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp Metrics: 5–6 hours hiking | 8 km | Elevation: 2,820 m to 3,500 m Activities: Emerge from the rainforest canopy into the heath and moorland zone, ascending across grassy ridges and volcanic rock outcroppings. Cross the edge of the Shira Plateau—one of the highest plateaus on Earth—for first open views of Kibo Peak. Overnight Stay: Shira 1 Camp Meals Included: Hot Breakfast, Trekking Lunch & Mountain Dinner Day 3: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp Metrics: 3–4 hours hiking | 10 km | Elevation: 3,500 m to 3,850 m Activities: Enjoy a slow, deliberate acclimatization walk across the vast Shira Plateau. Explore unique volcanic formations and giant senecio plants while enjoying vistas of the Western Breach and northern icefields. Arrive early for rest and altitude adaptation. Overnight Stay: Shira 2 Camp Meals Included: Hot Breakfast, Hot Camp Lunch & Mountain Dinner Day 4: Shira 2 Camp via Lava Tower to Barranco Camp Metrics: 6–7 hours hiking | 7 km | Elevation: 3,850 m to 4,600 m (Lava Tower) to 3,900 m Activities: Crucial "climb high, sleep low" acclimatization day. Trek into the alpine desert up to the dramatic Lava Tower (4,600 m) for hot lunch and rest. Descend into the scenic Barranco Valley, sheltered beneath the towering Barranco Wall. Overnight Stay: Barranco Camp Meals Included: Hot Breakfast, High-Altitude Hot Lunch & Mountain Dinner Day 5: Barranco Camp via Barranco Wall to Karanga Camp Metrics: 4–5 hours hiking | 5 km | Elevation: 3,900 m to 4,000 m Activities: Tackle the famous Barranco Wall—a fun, non-technical scramble offering breathtaking valley vistas. Traverse a series of gullies across the southern circuit before dropping into the Karanga Valley and ascending to camp for an afternoon of rest. Overnight Stay: Karanga Camp Meals Included: Hot Breakfast, Hot Camp Lunch & Mountain Dinner Day 6: Karanga Camp to Barafu Base Camp Metrics: 3–4 hours hiking | 4 km | Elevation: 4,000 m to 4,670 m Activities: Trek upward through bleak, exposed alpine desert to reach base camp situated on a high wind-blown ridge.
