About this experience

The Machame route, also known as the Whiskey Route, is a classic Kilimanjaro trail. It’s one of the most popular routes to climb Kilimanjaro. Hundreds of expeditions annually along this trail that starts in a beautiful tropical forest. The Machame route is available in 6- and 7-day variations, with the second offering a significantly better acclimatization profile and summit success rate. Machame 7 is a great route with amazing views suitable even for beginners. You will enjoy hiking through all five climatic zones of Kilimanjaro, scale the picturesque Barranco Wall, and marvel at the alien-looking Dendrosenecio kilimanjari – truly unique plants that are not found anywhere else in the world. Expert recommendation Be careful when choosing between the 6- and 7-day Machame route itineraries. The 6-day variation has much lower summit success rates and is suitable only for experienced trekkers or travelers with prior acclimatization. This is because the shorter itinerary skips the intermediate stay at the Karanga Camp, making it much more challenging to adapt well to the high altitude and have a good chance at summiting. Safety first: To maintain our strict safety standards, mountain expeditions are available only to participants aged 12–70 years. Day-by-Day Itinerary • Day 1: Machame Gate to Machame Camp • Elevation: ~1,800 m to 3,100 m (approx. 5,900 ft to 10,170 ft) • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours • Habitat: Montane rainforest • Overview: Complete park registration at Machame Gate, then hike through humid, lush rainforest filled with giant heather, mosses, and birdlife. • Day 2: Machame Camp to Shira Camp • Elevation: ~3,100 m to 3,840 m (approx. 10,170 ft to 12,600 ft) • Hiking Time: 4–6 hours • Habitat: Moorland / Open heath • Overview: Leave the forest behind as the trail climbs steeper ridges into the open moorland, opening up views of Kibo Peak and the expansive Shira Plateau. • Day 3: Shira Camp to Lava Tower, then down to Barranco Camp • Elevation: Up to 4,630 m (Lava Tower) and down to 3,860 m (Barranco Camp) • Hiking Time: 6–7 hours • Habitat: Alpine desert • Overview: Hike east toward the rocky alpine desert, reaching the high lunch stop at Lava Tower (4,600 m) to test altitude adjustment, then descend down into the lush, sheltered Barranco Valley. • Day 4: Barranco Camp to Barafu Camp • Elevation: ~3,860 m to 4,600 m (approx. 12,660 ft to 15,090 ft) • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours • Habitat: Alpine desert / Ice zone • Overview: Start the morning with a non-technical scramble up the iconic Great Barranco Wall, traverse the scenic alpine terrain beneath the southern ice fields, and arrive at the rocky, exposed Barafu Camp base camp. • Day 5: Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak (Summit), then descend to Mweka Camp • Elevation: 4,600 m to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), descending to Mweka Hut/Camp (~3,100 m) • Hiking Time: 11–15 hours total (7–8 hours up, 4–6 hours down) • Habitat: Arctic / Ice summit down to moorland/forest • Overview: Begin a midnight summit push via Stella Point to reach Uhuru Peak around sunrise. After celebrating at the roof of Africa, retrace your steps down past Barafu and continue a long descent to Mweka Camp for the night. • Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate / Village to Moshi • Elevation: ~3,100 m down to 1,640 m (approx. 10,000 ft to 5,400 ft) • Hiking Time: 3–4 hours • Habitat: Rainforest • Overview: A short, gentle descent through the wet, muddy lower rainforest path to Mweka Gate to sign out and collect official summit certificates, followed by a vehicle transfer back to Moshi or Arusha.
